The Sovelmash team is finalizing preparations for the release of the first batch of angle grinders and is showcasing other products of its own design and manufacture.

Import substitution and innovation

Angle grinder, traction and high-frequency motors, and a controller — all of this is manufactured at Sovelmash from Russian-sourced materials, in compliance with the decrees of the President of the Russian Federation. The software has also been developed in-house. Localization is close to 100%, except for bearings and electronic components. Tooling and production equipment are in place as well.

Stator production for Motylek

Previously, machining the aircraft engine’s stator took up to 28 hours; now it is mass-produced by casting in 2–2.5 minutes. Up to 50 units can be made per day. The unit cost is becoming clear and manageable. Step by step, Sovelmash is reducing cycle time, but each such step requires tooling, equipment, and financing.

Comparison with competitors

The Sovelmash angle grinder produces less noise, and its cutting speed is higher despite lower RPM. When compared with a 3.5 kW BLDC drive, Sovelmash’s 2.5 kW model cuts faster. The price has been announced — RUB 34,982 including VAT.

Workforce development

Specialists in die casting, process engineers for casting non-ferrous alloys, and stamping press operators are not available in sufficient numbers locally. Sovelmash had to find and train them in-house.

Sales strategy

Bringing a new product to market is challenging and costly. The project takes a different approach: every project participant is a potential promoter of the product and is invested in its sales.

Commissioning permit

The permit documents have been resubmitted, and Sovelmash is awaiting approval. To obtain the easement agreement, Sovelmash is now re-signing the contract with Technopolis Moscow — the land is now leased by Technopolis.
