The lifework of Max Pruss, the most famous airship captain: after the Hindenburg disaster

2 December 2024

On May 6, 1937, Captain Max Pruss organized the landing of the Hindenburg airship, delayed due to bad weather, which affected the course of history. Max Pruss became famous for rescuing the survivors of the disaster, even though he himself suffered severe burns.

Despite that, Pruss believed airships to be a safe mode of passenger transportation and spent his life trying to prove it by reviving airship construction. He even had a falling out with Reichsmarshal Hermann Göring because of that.

Max Pruss later became commandant of Frankfurt airport. He never admitted that the fire was due to crew error, claiming it was a terrorist attack. After the disaster, he tried to attract investment in the airship industry by developing a helium airship project, but to no avail. His dreams of reviving airships came true 30 years after his death when the Zeppelin NT airship took off in 1997.

In the 21st century, the new airships are environmentally friendly and efficient, used in science and business, just as the great captain would have wanted them to. The Russian project named New Generation Airships aims to prove their importance by offering favorable conditions for investors. Captain Pruss's dream of innovation and progress in airship construction continues to live on and is coming true right before our eyes!
